Holy City Hotspot: Exploring Jerusalem's Acropolis
At the heart of Jerusalem lies the enormous platform that Jews call the Temple Mount and Muslims name the Noble Sanctuary. Created by a succession of Jewish, Christian, and Muslim rulers, it has more recently emerged as a central stage for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. What do we know about the development of the city's acropolis? New research provides a fresh view on the evolution of this important and disputed ancient site.
Andrew Lawler is an award-winning journalist and writer. His latest book, Under Jerusalem: The Buried History of the World’s Most Contested City (Doubleday, 2021), tells the story of archaeological digs at Jerusalem’s sacred sites set against the backdrop of the city’s politics and competing ideologies.
