Croatian Cave Reveals Oldest-Known Astrologer’s Board

Bible and archaeology news

Excavations from a cave overlooking the Adriatic Sea in Croatia have revealed the remains of a 2,000-year-old astrologer’s board engraved with signs of the zodiac. Archaeologists with New York University’s Institute for the Study of the Ancient World made the discovery recently when they found that dozens of engraved ivory pieces excavated from the cave since 1999 actually form a complete Greco-Roman style zodiac, including images of Cancer, Gemini and Pisces. The finely-engraved pieces were found in the cave around a phallic-shaped stalagmite, along with thousands of sherds of Greek-style drinking vessels. While the cave may have been the work space of an ancient astrologer, the archaeologists believe it is equally possible that the board and the drinking vessels were offerings made to local deities.
