Errors in the Masoretes’ “Original” Hebrew Manuscripts of the Bible?

Why critical editions of the Bible—like Biblia Hebraica Quinta—are essential

Page from Leningrad Codex Bible, from the Majorettes

A MASTERPIECE OF THE MASORETES. The Masoretes established an astoundingly accurate tradition of Bible transmission. This carpet page from the Leningrad Codex (1008 C.E.)—of the tradition of the Masoretes—is the base text for Biblia Hebraica Quinta. The scribe of the manuscript Samuel son of Jacob, one of the Masoretes, even records his name. The Hebrew Bible—or Old Testament—that we have today differs from the Hebrew manuscripts of the Bible penned in the first millennium B.C.E. .  When transmitting any sort of a document from generation to generation, small alterations—some intentional, others not—are made. Even the most careful scribe makes errors, which are perpetuated and often compounded by future scribes. Thus, it should not surprise us that the Hebrew Bible, which has a transmission history of several millennia, contains textual difficulties, corruptions and even mistakes. Critical editions of the Bible examine these differences by looking at varying Hebrew witnesses and try to accurately reconstruct the original Hebrew manuscripts of the Bible. In the November/December 2013 issue of Biblical Archaeology Review, David Marcus and James A. Sanders discuss why critical editions of the Bible are necessary and describe the work that goes into creating such an edition in the article What’s Critical About a Critical Edition of the Bible?

Marcus and Sanders are both involved with the publication of Biblia Hebraica Quinta, the latest revision of Biblia Hebraica, which refers to the series of critical Bible editions published in Germany since 1905. The base for Biblia Hebraica Quinta is the Leningrad Codex, which dates to 1008 C.E. and was written by Samuel son of Jacob, who was part of a group of rabbinic scribes called the Masoretes.

Masoretes' Aleppo Codex

THE MASORETES DOING WHAT THE MASORETES DO BEST. This page comes from the Aleppo Codex. Until a third of it was burned in a 1947 anti-Jewish uprising in Syria, the Aleppo Codex was considered to be the oldest, most complete, and most accurate of the Masoretes’ manuscripts. The Masoretes filled its margins with notes to safeguard against corruption. Credit: David Harris/Ben-Zvi Institute in the Shrine of the Book.

Working in Tiberias during the Middle Ages, the Masoretes recognized the possibility of human error when copying the Hebrew Bible. They tried to combat it by adding supplements to the text. In the margins of the Masoretes’ manuscripts, there are innumerable notes—masorah—to safeguard the text. The precision with which the Masoretes were able to preserve the Hebrew text beginning in the seventh century C.E. is astounding. Nevertheless, the Masoretes were not working with the original Hebrew manuscripts of the Bible. Corruptions had already crept into the versions they copied.

The Masoretes’ efforts preserved the Biblical text in the first millennium C.E. Modern scholarship, with critical editions of the Bible like Biblia Hebraica Quinta, is bringing us even closer to reconstructing the original Hebrew manuscripts of the Bible.

Good day.In my searh for the true name of our Father I came upon a very disturbing accuzation. It is claimed that the name YHWH weather it is pronounced Yahweh/Yahovah/Yehovah,was changed from the original Hebrew Moses spoke,by the Jews(Edomites not Judians)during their time in Babilonia. They changed the holy name of our Father into Yah which is the name of the moongod,Babilonians and Egyptians served. The tetragrammaton appears on tarrotcards and in freemason shrines.YHWH is the name of the moongod. It is also beiing chanted by witshes, and demons answers….Al of our biblescolars and preachers were taught from the changed text which is the aramic hebrew. The strongs also is based on that wrong text. How much truth is in this? Can you please answer me?The one site I came upon who describes it best is [broken link removed by site admin]. Also look at any site Yah the moongod.

To all that read Suzelle’s question regarding a “name for God”, realize that Jesus Himself NEVER called His Father by a name! God has sent the spirit of His Son into our hearts, “crying, Abba Father”!. When we follow the example and instruction of Jesus we are truly blessed by abiding in the truth.

The facts are many regarding the made up names Jehovah and later Yahweh, that demonstrate a hocus pocus by taking consonants from the Tetragramaton and inserting vowels from another word Adonai. Wala…that is where Jehovah came from. A hundred years later after that created blasphemy, Gesenius later changed this bogus name for Yahweh in the 18th Century AD. The concern is many deceivers have gone out into the world. Attributing a bogus name to God is shameful. While many young in the Lord go through a proving and testing to hold to the truth, God is faithful to reveal it.

Considering the apostate heresy of ancient Israel with the fathers and elders adding and subtracting from the Word of God, thus making it of no effect, and their worship in vain. Jesus says so. Mark 7; Isaiah 29:10-13.

In Isaiah 14:12 there is the title of the light bringer. Jupiter is his name known as Yah as cited by Suzelle’s question. Look it up for yourself.
Israel the corrupt vineyard had more gods than cities, and altars to them, than streets per Jeremiah 11:13. So, take heed what spirit you let influence you.

These antichrist doctrines of those who hate Jesus and God the Father are great masterful deceivers as their father.

Prove all things and hold fast to what is good, true and genuine. It requires the grace and kindness of the Lord, but He joyfully does so to those who love and obey Him.

Here is a very good outline of this subject and the conspiracy against God and His Christ by my friend and sister in Jesus Dolly Webber.

Actually the Bible test we have today is the most accurate. We know this through the Dead Sea scrolls. The differences between the scrolls and what we have today are not different. The Qumran people added to their scrolls interpreted pieces I. The actual text itself to provide themselves better understanding of the text. These are FACTS . I’ve studied the experts that were and still are very close to the DSS .

It’s simple. EVERY time you see CAPITALIZED words in your Bible such as God or Lord, it means the Hebrew name for ‘ieue’ (pronounced Yahweh) the Hebrew name for ‘God’ or Elohim was purged from the translation and replaced with a more acceptable name for “ieue”. (See I am that I am in all caps as well.)

Thank you for your comment Deborah. You really helped to keep the focus where it should be for this conversation.

BAS is basically a secular perspective of the Bible in its postings. This article is just another instance of using false intellectualism to cast doubt on the truth that God has in fact preserved His Written Word throughout human history.

With Bibleworks I have searched ‘ego eimi in their combined Septuagint and NT texts. Also ho on, as in ego eimi ho on. The results are interesting. The LORD of hosts, or Jehovah of Sabaoth seems like the identity statement of hosts, and the almighty. Every creature has an identity and every ‘kind’ has a typical identity. When Jesus says of the two great commandments of the law, the second commandment is like the first, it means the love of God is like the love of neighbour, and when John says God is love, to my mind, that’s perhaps the most cogent summarization of the two great commandments of the law. The divine name is the supreme being and love is supreme in any being or it is not being very long. Some Hebrews seem to know this as common knowledge and by intuition because it is as much practical as it is mystical, the supreme being in all the beings, or even the word of love, which is Christ in us, the hope of glory.

  7. RWL says:

Errors in the MT? Why not look at the errors of the LXX/Septuagint? The theories of errors (which were only Greek, Latin, & English speaking people’s biases and prejudices) in the Hebrew Scriptures came to fruition with Tryannius Rufinus, Constantine, & Augustine (the irony of accusing the Jews with making mistakes with their own history is lugubrious). These individuals believed that the ‘Hebrew OT was tainted with Judaism.’ Can you believe that?

  8. Sam says:

There are no “corruptions”. Improvements, yes, corruptions, no. The improvements were from Ezra and the scribes, and they had the oracles of God as Israel – they had the power to edit and make scripture. The Masoretes understood they were copying that text from Ezra, not the originals.

Israeli Scholars Discover Corrections, Erasures, Revisions in Oldest Biblical Manuscript

“Analysis of Leningrad Codex shows that about a millennium ago, there were several different versions of the Bible that evolved over time

… Scholars from the Academy of the Hebrew Language who have been analyzing the codex discovered that it contains hundreds of corrections meant to bring it into line with the familiar biblical text we know today. The changes were made by erasing, altering or adding letters and vocalization marks.

These changes show that back when the Leningrad Codex was written, roughly a millennium ago, the Jewish bookshelf contained several different versions of the biblical text.

The corrections in the Leningrad Codex reveal another stage in the development of the Masoretic text, a process that continued for hundreds of years. Early on, during the first centuries of the Common Era, there are still changes in entire sentences. Later, the changes are limited to individual words, and finally merely to vocalization marks and cantillation notes.”

the best option, go back to the Dead Sea Scrolls… the ‘newer’ “Translations” have removed Messianic texts. All of them.
