Another Egyptian Antiquities Chief Resigns

Bible and archaeology news

In the face of growing and increasingly violent demonstrations by antiquities department employees, Mohammad Abdel Fatah, the recently-named secretary general of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA), resigned from his post this week, less than two months after accepting the job. “I am fed up,” said Abdel Fatah. “All these protests stand against proceeding with archaeological works properly.” Striking employees at the SCA have increased their protests in recent days, demanding an increase in the minimum wage and better working conditions. The strikes have caused several SCA buildings to be closed, while military and civilian police were called in to disperse a demonstration in front of the SCA’s headquarters. “I am not against any of the protesters’ demands,” said Abdel Fatah, “but I am against their way [of] asking, and the [timing].” Abdel Fatah also said he felt powerless to make any of the necessary reforms to the SCA, since all of his decisions had to first be approved by Prime Minister Essam Sharaf.
