It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Geza Vermes, a giant in the fields of Dead Sea Scrolls and Christian Origins scholarship and a friend of BAS. An Oxford don, professor of Jewish Studies and director of the Forum for Qumran Research at the Oxford Centre for Postgraduate Hebrew Studies, Vermes was a specialist on the historical Jesus and the world that he inhabited. Vermes published the first English translation of the Dead Sea Scrolls in 1962, and today, more readers encounter the scrolls through his The Dead Sea Scrolls in English than through any other work.
We will issue a more complete remembrance of this scholar and friend in the coming days.
