Update on Tayinat Lion

Bible and archaeology news

According to archaeologists working at Tel Tayinat in southeastern Turkey, a recently discovered stone statue of a roaring lion was found guarding the entrance to the site’s monumental Iron Age gate. The statue, which stands more than 4 feet high, shows the lion in a seated position, with ears drawn back and claws extended. According to excavation director Timothy Harrison, lions and other majestic images were used by the neo-Hittite kings of Syro-Anatolia to symbolize their role as divine protectors.
